The goal of a TCS education is to realize each student's full potential — and to promote their continuing success by instilling self advocacy. The method or ”concept” we use is a holistic approach that encircles the student with an array of support to address both social and academic development. The TCS concept encompasses:
Learning Profiles
Our mission is to educate each student according to identified strengths and interests; Therefore, a Student Learning Profile created by the staff is utilized to determine each student’s needs and the pathway to addressing those needs. This profile is a living document, in constant revision as the student progresses through each year.
Subject matter is taught through a variety of methodologies with accommodations for differences in learning style incorporated into the classroom environment, as described in the student's Learning Profile.
Accommodations to Academic Level
Students are placed in courses according to individual skills and
according to state graduation requirements. Enrichment and remediation are available for all students according to their abilities.

Curriculum
In addition to the basics of language arts, math, science and social studies, classes are available in foreign languages, art and physical education. TCS curriculum meets state accreditation for a college prep program and is synchronized to the public school curriculum recommended by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. We use the learning profiles to determine the most effective presentation style. We then, present our curriculum in a multi-sensory manner so that every student is able to understand and perform competencies in line with the curriculum standards of the state of Pennsylvania. Enrichment and remediation are available for all students as needed.
Independent Study
Each year, seminar courses driven by student interest, offer a variety of topics, such as criminal justice, human development, comparative religion or film.
As it is important to recognize and develop an exceptional strength, at times, independent study courses are developed to meet the needs of a student.
Incorporating Technology into the Learning Process
All classes incorporate internet research and related computer
applications (from word processing to complex computer functions),
while emphasizing interactive, hands-on projects to promote integrated,
active learning.

Student/Staff Relations
Our small school environment allows us to know your child in a positive manner to help each student navigate through middle and high school experiences. Positive guidance for each child begins with the September goal sheet and contract created by students and their parents. Regular meetings between student and teacher foster this close relationships.
Social Skills Development
Social skills are incorporated throughout the day with particular emphasis placed on recreational physical education activities, such as an all-school bowling, rock-climbing or snow tubing trips. The Concept School is a community in which staff and students work together to create a safe and enjoyable environment.

Problem Solving and Self Advocacy
Students are encouraged to problem-solve through individual coaching
with staff.
Peer Leadership and Mentoring
Older students mentor younger classmates with both academics and social activities. The small, close-knit social opportunities vary from private sessions to all-school ventures. Not only are students offered coaching experiences with peers, but also through a close relationship with staff. The Social Studies curriculum offers opportunities for Upper School and Middle School students to have a joint educational project. Besides being fun and a source of pride, the potential for need help/can help is designed into the project —resulting in great mentoring opportunities.
As each student grows in the capacity to self-advocate in a positive manner, opportunities for leadership are provided through our Peer Leadership program. Our Peer Leaders are an integral part of the school rules and host visitors to our monthly Open House, an opportunity for you to sample The Concept School experience.
